John Stanton Ward, CBE RA RWS VPRP NEAC (1917-2007) John Ward was a painter and draughtsman of exceptional quality. While best known for his portraits, he was a prolific and wide-ranging artist, who produced a significant body of illustrative work. Ward is probably best known for being an art tutor to the Prince of Wales. He was born in Hereford and attended the small Hereford School of Arts and Crafts, later earning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art where he won the prize for drawing. He taught for a while at Wimbledon School of Art before taking on illustration commissions for Vogue magazine. He undertook many royal portraits, including the Princess of Wales in her wedding dress and the christenings of Prince William and Harry. He became an associate of the Royal Academy in 1956, and a full member in 1966. He and three other resigned in 1997 in protest at the Sensation exhibition. He never rejoined. He was also a member of the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. His work is represented in the Royal Collection and numerous public collections, including the National Portrait Gallery.
